Fire doors protect you and others in the building.
In homes with communal areas, you will find fire doors on the stairwells, the corridors and flat front doors. You will also see them protecting areas where there’s a risk of a fire starting, such as bin storage or service cupboards. Sometimes, you will find fire doors inside flats, but this depends on the specific design and layout of the individual flat.
Fire door advice
Here are some tips to ensure you are doing your part to keep yourself and others in your building safe.
- Always keep your fire door closed. A fire door only works when it’s closed, so do not wedge or prop open your door.
- Do not tamper with self-closing devices. They are there to ensure the door closes correctly.
- Report any damage or faults immediately by calling our Repairs team on 0300 3300 900 (extension 7800).
Keeping your fire door safe
Do not alter your fire door.
Never carry out any repairs or works on your fire door. This can damage it and make it less likely to work in an emergency.
- Don’t drill into or cut the door in any way.
- Don’t paint over the seals of the door.
- Don’t attempt to replace the handles, hinges, or hardware.
If you would like to make an alteration that may impact your fire door, you can apply for permission here. Alternatively, you can contact our Repairs team on 0300 3300 900 (extension 7800).
